Well, we made it! Here's my last post for the requirements. I want to say I'll keep posting after this class, but I know how I am and it's a stretch to say that. That being said, I understand that this would be an important thing to keep going. Through this blog I have been able to express myself in ways that I've never really done before. I would say that this is a very healthy experience and also slightly therapeutic.
In conclusion, I can see that through writing my experiences, and reading those of others, I am able to learn and see things through another perspective. This helps me connect more with others and understand what they feel as I'm sure at least a few of you who read this can see a little into my head and understand what my thoughts and feelings are about a few things.
I'm going to do my best to continue posting. Don't get mad at me if it doesn't happen very often, but I'll try to keep you posted with how my hang gliding career is going and such like that. I'll try and give you the BYU experience through my eyes. I hope you all have a wonderful day and enjoy reading my writings!

Finals (19)
I don't think this would be a true college student's blog if it didn't have a lil' somethin' somethin' about finals! Thankfully, this isn't finals week but I'm sure you can all feel what it's like to have Dooms Day approaching slowly and inevitably. For a few of you, this is your first semester and you haven't experienced what finals at BYU are like. In all honesty, it's only as bad as you make it. If you like to stress and freak yourself out, you'll have a miserable week. So think about that. If you are confident, give yourself adequate time for EFFECTIVE studying and plan out your week well, you'll be fine. Don't try and cram nor keep yourself up too late. The only thing you'll do is wear your brain out and it won't perform well. Go to review sessions, study in groups, try and teach others about your class, make flash cards, and look for other opportunities to apply what you learn in your classes. These are some of the most effective ways to study. Don't fool yourself like I do sometimes where you just stare at the material hoping that it'll just morph into your brain, it won't!
I hope this helps you at least a little so you'll make it through finals week. Just remember, you'll survive, your professors aren't out to get you although it may feel that way sometimes. Take it easy and good luck on those wee finals!

Almost There (18)
Well I'm starting to get close to finishing the required blog posts for my writing class. The closer I get the more excited I am to actually finish! I am enjoying writing about whatever comes to my head and tell you what my thoughts and opinions are about the experiences I've had. If I have any sort of advice it would be to check class requirements and make sure you're staying on top of them so you don't have to do it all at once and hope you at least finish! That way you're not only focused on getting it done, but that you're actually able to focus on doing it well. I'm not saying that this isn't a good blog. No way, I'm too prideful for that! I am saying, however, that this blog would be so much better if instead of writing it all right now, I could be perfecting it and adding more details and fun little mix-ins. Just remember that, pals. It'll serve you well!
Soar (17)
I don't know about for you guys, but flying has always been something that has caught my attention as something I want to do. I'm not talking about flying from here to California, or any sort of commercial flying, although very convenient. I'm talking about flying my own vessel! I want to control where and how I fly. To be able to have the freedom of a bird to dip, dive and fly as high as I can is what I want. In search for these flying opportunities I went skydiving a few times. Although skydiving is very exciting and gives an adrenaline rush, it wasn't quite the flying experience I was looking for. I then decided I would try hang gliding to see if that fulfilled my needs. I went for a tandem flight at the Point of the Mount to try it out. All I can say is that there's nothing like it! The wind picks you up and without any sort of propeller or thrust you can climb higher and higher if you know your way around thermals and other wind formations. The ground is no longer a limitation and you aren't stuck in a two dimensional plane, you can go wherever you want!
I decided that hang gliding was something I wanted to do. I already had a friend who was into it and had his own glider so it wasn't hard to get connected with the right people and as of yesterday, I was able to get my hang one rating! The hang one is the first rating they give out which means I'm only allowed to go under supervision of an instructor and in certain wind conditions, but I am now well on my way to becoming a hang gliding pilot!

Sailing (16)
The same uncle that I go rock climbing with and I actually have a lot of things we like to do together. Another activity is sailing. When I got home from my mission, my uncle and I decided we wanted to buy a boat. We found a nice Nacra 5.8 for sale and we each paid for half of it. The 5.8 is a catamaran used for racing and that's just what we wanted to do with it. My uncle grew up sailing and I had taken some sailing classes in Boston when I was younger so we decided we'd probably have a chance. We started entering in some races around Utah and had a great time! We didn't always get first but we were often in the top 3. Unfortunately, we managed to snap the mast a one point last year so for the rest of the season we didn't get to sail but last winter we drove out to Washington to buy a new mast and get back into it this year. However, at the end of the summer this year, we managed to bend the mast at a race at Bear Lake. We're not sure why we are so hard on those masts but we're really good at ruining them.
Although the boat has been out of commission, I still like to think about sailing. It's such a different experience. Learning how to use the wind to get where you want is fun and when you can use it to get where you want at high speeds is even more fun! There's no feeling like having the wind blowing in your face as water splashes when you cut through waves. It's fun to go in calm winds and just enjoy being out on the water, but my favorite conditions is when it's so windy waves are forming and white capping. That's when things start to get interesting!

Fake Rocks (15)
Well since I've gotten myself talking about skiing and snowboarding, I decided I wanted to talk about the other things I like to do. One of these favorite pastimes of mine is rock climbing. Before my mission I used to be pretty good. I went quite often and also from playing on the drumline in high school my grip was pretty strong. Now I don't have the same capabilities as I used to but I still love conquering walls and making it to the top of hard climbs. There's nothing better than climbing in the mountains on real rocks but you need to have a lot of equipment that's pretty expensive. I often go with my uncle outdoors, he has everything you need: ropes, draws, etc. All I really have are shoes, a harness, and a belay device. When I get the chance to go outside I take it but it's not very often. Since it's hard to plan to go outside, climbing gyms are very convenient for when I just want to go. Gyms are fun because they have specific climbs set up for all sorts of different climbing levels. Although it's not nearly as fun as climbing outside, it's nice to be able to hang out with friends and easier evaluate your climbing skills on those plastic hand holds.
Snow (14)
It's starting to get cold out and as everyone knows in Utah, that means snow! (unless we have another year like last year, meh) I absolutely love the snow. A lot of the people I come in contact with don't really understand why I like it so much. Most people like bright sunny days, palm trees, the beach, and that sort of thing. Don't get me wrong, I like all those things too of course, but there's something about snow that I just can't get over. I'm sure part of these feelings come from the fact that I enjoy skiing and snowboarding. I got to go snowboarding for the first time this year last week and it was so much fun! I went with a few of my friends from high school and we had a blast!
We went to Park City and started out in the terrain park playing around on the jumps and the rails they had set up. Even early in the season they already had 20 ft. jumps and creative rail combinations to mess around on. After a few runs there we went to got meet up with my friend's cousins on som other runs. At first we couldn't find them so we decided to race. We have an app that tracks how fast you go and we decided to see just how fast we could go. We did this a few times and reached max speeds from 48 to 55 mph. Almost as fast as my personal record of last year, 61 mph.
The adrenaline rush of going fast and going off jumps, cliffs, and other obstacles keeps me coming back and trying new things! All of this only made possible through the snow. If you don't like the winter maybe try some of these activities and you won't be able to be patient enough for the snow to come back next year!
Here's one of the jumps we had so much fun on.

Steam Reflections (13)
I think when I said I should crank up the steam, I started to think about all the other sayings that had to do with steam: Run out of Steam. Steam it off. Full steam ahead... and other phrases like that. I thought about how the first machines and even some today use steam to operate. In this sense we compare ourselves to machines. It's kind of an interesting thing to think about. We don't run off steam but it makes sense what the idioms mean. Figures of speech often have strange origins that, if you don't understand, would make the phrase seem very odd. Sometimes, however, I enjoy using a very literal interpretation when people use idioms. I'm sure this practice is very annoying to others but it makes me giggle and I'm selfish sometimes so they'll just have to deal with it.
Steam (12)
Now looking at what I have accomplished in these last few minutes, I've realized I've got to crank up the steam if I ever want to finish this thing.
It's strange that I refer
to my body to a machine,
maybe I'll consider
thinking that I'm a crafty fiend.
My abstract ideas
and my random thoughts of genius,
show that I function as
a human that is devious.
Sorry about that, I just wanted to make a wee poem. I'm sure you all get that urge sometimes. Not really sure where the idea came from either. I'll see if I can diagnose the cause in my next post.
Perspectives (11)
I have now gotten myself on a tangent about perspective. In the few literature classes I've had, I've learned that many writers write to open our minds and give us different perspectives. It is seen very often actually. An example that comes to my mind is the book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. You all know the story so I'm not going to summarize it for you, sorry. (If you don't know the story then go read it, Foo!) There are some very interesting ideas that can give a view of different perspectives on their own but what stands out most to me, is that After Ender's Game, Card then wrote the exact same story but the only thing that was different was that the story was told by Ender's good ol' buddy, Bean. Thus giving us Ender's Shadow. Funny thing about the book is that when you read it, you don't feel like you're reading Ender's Game. It's crazy! If you don't believe me, tough! Go try it! You'll see how much more you can learn from one experience if you look at it in a different way.
Other Tangent... I should just summarize Ender's Game to score another blog post... naw ;)

Reflection on My Personal Goal 2.0 (10)
One thing I realized about doing homework (it was more of an epiphany during my last post... 2 minutes ago), it's possible to use one idea for multiple purposes. I'm not talking about repetition, what I mean is seeing the same thing from a different perspective. I'm not trying to just drag something out to make the rest of these blog posts (ok, that's pretty much exactly what I'm doing), but I'm talking about my feelings and thoughts that I'm having about my own feelings and thoughts. That's pretty much what a blog is isn't it? So I feel like I am justified in my actions. However, if I'm docked points for it... darn, at least I tried.
Anyway, I really am starting to enjoy making this blog by typing basically whatever comes to my mind. I'm sure most of you are thinking, "Gee wiz! This kid is a nut!" ... you're probably right, high five! I'll keep this rockin' for ten more posts! By then I will have probably lost enthusiasm, but that will be great for other perspectives of what I'm feeling. I guess the only advice I would give is, prepare yourself!
Reflection on My Personal Homework Goal (9)
I believe I have successfully shot myself in the foot. All of my young padawans that follow this blog should remember how I had mentioned I had a new goal: Do all my homework. Well here I am realizing that I've got quite a bit to do for tomorrow morning. Never fear, kids, I've got a Red Bull and am ready to kick this blog till it falls and then continue to kick it while it's down until it has 20 posts in it. All I have to say for all y'all is get ready to see just how creative I can get with these posts! Enjoy!!!
All That being said, I don't think I've quite reached half a page yet so Ima blabber on about how I need to blabber on to make that half page. If you haven't noticed, it's a little difficult for me to fulfill the requirements of this blog... yup, you nailed it.

Changing the world One Stitch at a Time (8)
All throughout life I have been involved in many different activities, especially in high school. I had spread myself very thin through difficult honors classes, playing percussion in many different bands both with friends and in school, running on the track team, and a whole slew of other goodies such as snowboarding, hanging out with friends and family, and all that jazz. From participating in so many activities I was always fighting to stay awake in my classes, which is still sometimes an issue today but that’s a story for another day. No matter how hard I would try, I just couldn't manage to keep my eyes open.
I did my best to participate in my classes to stay attentive, but sometimes I was just so tired that I didn’t care about the class anymore and just checked out for a wee bit. You would think that sitting in a desk would make sleeping uncomfortable but I quickly developed the skill to sleep in any situation imaginable. A contributing factor to such a fine tuned skill of sleeping anywhere, was probably the fact that I slept on the floor for a good portion of my life, also another story for another day but more details are available upon request.
In my junior year, I had a history class which was exceptionally hard to stay awake in. For some reason it felt as if the teacher wanted me to sleep, either by the way he’d speak or how he seemed to use an excessive amount of films in teaching the class, it was impossible for me to remain conscious, especially with the lights off.
I didn’t enjoy sleeping in class, I knew I needed to pay attention and I truly did want to learn the content being presented. I respected my teachers and wanted to know what they had to say, but tiredness would overcome my will to be a good student. This epic battle between class participation and sleeping was starting to have nasty effects on my grades. Just as in real warfare there are unwanted civilian casualties and destruction of urban areas, my homework assignments and, ultimately, my grades were innocent sufferers to this intense fight.
As the year went on, I continued to sleep and my grades continued to hang out towards the lower percentiles of the class until one day, liberation from such sleep slavery came into my life. During a session of nap time, also known as history class, I stirred in my deep slumber and managed to catch a glimpse of my friend, Jeremy. Something about him caught my attention. It wasn't what he was wearing, it wasn’t what he was saying, it was what he was doing! He looked so focused and at the same time, satisfied. He was looking down at his hands as they moved in the same pattern over and over again with yarn slowly feeding in. “Dude, are you crocheting?” I asked, very surprised and impressed. “Yes, I sure am.” He replied. I couldn't believe it! How odd, he was just sitting there in class crocheting away at an afghan. I was suddenly overcome by a strong desire to learn how to crochet as well. “That’s way cool!” I exclaimed, “can you teach me?” “Sure.” The next day he brought some extra yarn and an extra crochet hook. It was a slow learning process and Jeremy was very patient with me. I can’t remember what my very first creation was but I do know that it ended up being hideous and non-functional, but I didn't care, I was hooked! (pun intended) As soon as school was over that day, I longboarded over to Hobby Lobby to buy my own equipment and embark on my crocheting journey.
Day after day I would crochet. I started out making countless headbands and other miscellaneous accessories such as phone covers, iPod cases, hats, and my personal favorite, the pen pouch. It was a nerd’s dream! Beautifully hand crafted and custom made to hang from a belt, holding all writing utensils and securing them with a fashionable button. Class went from being nap time to production time. My excitement and enthusiasm for crocheting scared away all thoughts of sleep giving me eight hours of crocheting a day, a perfect amount of time to get my projects done. A nice side effect was that I could now listen to the lectures from my teachers as I crocheted instead of having strange dreams with mixed academic tangents and philosophies.
My grades actually started improving as I was now more attentive to the lectures and even started to participate more in class, even though most of my participation came from pop-off comments to get a little giggle or chuckle from the sweet honeys in the class. It was nice to have so much time to crochet, it’s unbelievable how much kids would pay for just some simple hand-made item; better yet though, I was learning.
Crocheting became a big hit, Shane, another friend in my history class, soon asked for a crocheting lesson and then it wasn't much longer before it was the new fad. Our senior year, Jeremy, Shane, and I created the crochet club which was basically an extra hour or two after school where we would get together to crochet and watch movies such as Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, and other excellent films. Strangely, the club mostly consisted of wrestlers, football players, and about half the soccer team... with a few others.
I have since learned how to make many different projects including jackets, shoes, blankets, and quite a few others, I even taught my grandmother how to crochet, go figure. I greatly enjoy crocheting, there is something therapeutic to its monotonous repetition and I love the freedom to create whatever I want as long as I can figure out how to do it. The best part about it is when I’m having trouble staying awake, I just need to grab my hook and go to work. Thank you Jeremy!

BYU Experience (7)
Although this is not my first semester at BYU, at times I feel as if it were. I'm having a hard time making time for homework. I think in reality it's just my fault for deciding to do other things instead of actually doing my homework. I'm not quite sure why this is or what has gotten into me but I know that I've got to change this if I want to be able to pass my classes, which is why I'm here right. I need a good education! I guess you could say this is my mid-semester resolution to just hunker down, become a hermit if I have to, and get my stinkin' homework done!

Family Research Paper (6)
Looking back at the opportunity I've had to write this paper about my great-great-great grandfather, Benjamin Perkins, I have been able to grow in my writing capabilities and grow closer to my family.
It may be sad to state that this has been the longest paper I have ever written, but writing has never really been my favorite pastime, nor one of my strengths. I was able to learn how to do more in depth research to find the information needed to bring Ben's story to life. At times I would think that I had gathered enough information and had written all that I could about it but then I would see where I was at and what the requirement was and I still had more to go. It helped me push myself in a way that I don't normally do, which, not being the most comfortable experience, helped me learn and stretch my capabilities.
In knowing his story and learning about Benjamin Perkins, I feel a connection to the past that I had never felt before. In researching, I was able to get to know him better which is an awesome experience. I know about the accomplishments he achieved and that gives me hope to also be able to reach my goals and pass through trials helping others just like he did. It's in my blood, I know I can do it.

Analysis on "Is it I?" by President Uchtdorf in the October, 2014 General Conference (5)
One of my favorite things of all time is that every six months I get the opportunity to listen to the Prophet and the Apostles who speak about different things we can do to improve our lives.
This October, 2014, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf gave a talk entitled "Is it I?" at the Saturday evening Priesthood Session. In this talk, Uchtdorf helps us understand how important it is to analyse our lives instead of the lives of others by using parables with pathos to teach his point.
The first parable that Uchtdorf uses is that of a beautiful yard: "This neighbor kept his lawn perfectly manicured, flowers always in bloom, the trees healthy and shady. It was obvious that the neighbor made every effort to have a beautiful lawn." He later goes on to explain how another neighbor notices a dandelion in the yard and thinks of all the things he can do to remove it and judges the neighbor even though his own yard is full of dandelions: "These thoughts totally occupied his mind as he walked toward his own home. He entered his house without even glancing at his own front yard—which was blanketed with hundreds of yellow dandelions." This is a story that everyone can relate to which creates pathos and helps the audience understand how many times we judge others by their small imperfections when we don't realize our own problems are considerably larger.
Another parable that Uchtdorf uses is one from the Bible that the Savior Himself taught: "Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? …
“… First cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye." (Matthew 7: 3,5) This shows how hard it is for us to help others with their problems when we ignore our own. In this parable it would be impossible to help someone remove a mote from their eye if in our own eye we have a beam and cannot see clearly.
From the few points we looked at we can see how President Uchtdorf uses parables to gain pathos to teach.

Thinking About My Ancestors (4)
My grandmother has always told me stories about how our ancestors came through The Hole in the Rock to go south and settle Southern Utah. I've heard the story a million times... well mostly that it had happened more than anything else, but I feel it's time that I've learned the actual details. I know that they were part of the explosive team to blast through the rock but I want to know, why did they go? How did they do it? What kinds of explosives did they use? Was it dangerous? How did they learn to use explosives? Who did they go with? I am going to embark on the quest to find these details (ask grandma what's up). I'll keep all y'alls posted!
Thesis:
My great-great-great grandfather, Benjamin Perkins, was an excellent man because he followed the Prophet, served others, and was a hard worker.

Reflection on Writing Them Sweet Papes (3)
As a college student I have had a number of opportunities to write papers, essays, short stories, etc. Throughout my entire life, writing has been the bane of my existence and I have always been able to throw in a few good complaints about why I don't want to do it. That being said, I am learning how to just suck it up and deal with it. I recently wrote a rhetorical analysis paper on the speech The Great Society by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. In this experience, writing the paper wasn't as bad as I expected. Due to and overload of homework from a few of my other classes, it was a little difficult to get it started but all in all it was a good experience. I've never really analyzed a speech and it was interesting to do so and see what there is to learn a far as that goes. I was able to learn that Johnson was a very persuasive speaker and used rhetoric successfully.

The Stories That Bind Us (2)
In the New York Times article "The Stories That Bind Us" it talks about how sharing family stories and traditions will help families be stronger and plow through the trials that come into their lives. This is a very interesting subject to me and from personal experience I have been able to see that it holds true. In my family, we have many traditions that have been reoccurring throughout many years. We also share stories with each other about our ancestors both distant and close. Through these stories and traditions, my family has become very close and when trials come we stand together and are able to face them.

The Intro (1)
I am Chazzybob, Charles Robert Sampson, and this is my life at BYU.
I recently read a talk by Elder Bednar entitled "Things As They Really Are". Bednar talks about how in this day and age technology is changing very rapidly and it effects the lifestyle of many people and has even created a false sense of life. The reality of virtual reality is, in a few cases, very disturbing. He explains how we must control our use of technology and social media as to not lose our real identity to a false avatar. The best way to achieve this is to always be true and honest in what we say and post online and to always participate in uplifting and wholesome entertainment. Through this blog I hope to help in these aspects, to explain things as they really are and to help others find appropriate ways to entertian themselves and not waste time.
