Philosopher?

Well... it's been one semester since I have posted anything and I'm sorry about that. It's not that nothing has happened in my life, I'm just not good at this blogging thing. Anyway, in an effort to get better (and mostly because this a requirement for a class) I am going to post some of my thoughts about writing and language that I came up with during an in-class essay. Hope all y'alls enjoy it!
One of the topics I’d like to write about today is writing. Writing, to me is one of the most important aspects of language. I find it funny that I am saying this, considering the fact that I don’t really like to write. My entire life has been a struggle to complete writing assignments. Growing up, my parents would always try and get me to write in a journal but I would always refuse. That being said, I’m starting to understand just how important it is. Writing creates a bridge between people, generations, time, and many different barriers. Writing also preserves languages and makes it possible for easier communication. It is interesting to think that we can read something today that was written hundreds of years ago. When we read it, we then become connected to the writer. It could be a journal, a fictional, or a scientific theory but still connects us to the writer and others living at the time. In the Church we are taught to write journals and also read the journals or historical accounts of our ancestors. Many studies have shown that, through reading about one’s heritage, people become emotionally stronger and more resilient. Through reading we are able to build this strength because we can see the trials and difficulties that others went through and in knowing that they could pass through it and survive then we can too. I recently decided to keep a journal and, in doing so, I am noticing that it even helps me in my own daily life. I can remember the things I have done better and it helps me meditate on what’s going on in my life. I’ve noticed that sometimes I feel detached from life, which I’m sure many people have also felt, but through writing about my life, I have felt a change in that. Writing communicates to the mind and helps it process information better. Writing creates that link that can pass through time and still communicate effectively. As I grew up, although I didn't enjoy writing, I did enjoy reading a lot. I read many books growing up which helped me become more educated in language. I was able to communicate on a higher level than my classmates because of how much I read. I think that reading and writing should go hand in hand. My reading was a very jealous action. I never once thought that somebody had to write all the things that I was reading. I never realized the time and thought it takes to create a story. I never thought how much planning it takes to weave a plot. I still don’t understand it, but I am now realizing that it is very difficult. It takes great effort to write. In knowing this, I appreciate more the things I have read and things people write. I think the most appropriate way to show this appreciation is to write. I’m not saying that for every book we read we should write one, no. What we should do is take the time to write important things down so that people in future know what happened and what was going on in our time. The history books need content and I think that would be a valuable way to fill them up.
Writing was the original way to communicate great distances. Imagine what it’d be like if we couldn’t write letters and the mailman would have to go and recite each message. Would he mix messages, forget important details, change words on purpose. It is interesting to think. There would be so much confusion! Writing helps messages stay the same because it is something permanent. If language were to be compared to states of matter, writing would be a solid and speaking would be a liquid or maybe even a gas. There is so much more power in writing than there is in speaking. Why is it that they document speeches?  If it were only meant to be heard then there would be no point but since writing preserves then it is important for it to be written. If we want our lives to be preserved, if we want to be alive after we die then we must write. Nowadays, there are so many different ways to write and document our experiences. Facebook and other social media platforms could be used in this aspect. Many people do use them to document their lives but don’t always do it the best way possible. It’s not a big deal to say what you had for lunch or other trivial things like that but feelings, accomplishments, trials, and other things like that will have a much more lasting impact.
When we write, we also take more time to think about what we’re going to say and how we want to say it. I think that’s why writing is often more powerful than speaking. The more we think and careful phrase what we want to say, the more effect it is going to have.
Writing is like another way to preserve memory. Our minds go through so much information that many things are often forgotten. Through writing, we make it possible to recall information just by looking it up. This is also very important in communication. If we want to say something to someone but forget what it was it is useless. When we write we can then remember and communicate our message.
Writing can also help clear your head and help you say what you want to say and only that, rather than useless information that happens to come out of your mouth clouding what you really wanted to say. I have even noticed that writing does such a great job of clearing my mind that mine goes completely empty! I do attribute that to my desire as a young buck to run from writing whenever I got the chance. In speaking there are often too many things that are said that, in reality, could and should have been omitted. It’s true that also happens in writing but I believe it happens less. In writing more, we can help focus our thoughts to just communicate the important things. I think many conflicts could be avoided if we spoke similar to how we write. I also think that if we write more, that will influence our speech in a desirable way.
In my Spanish class, we had a test where we were given poems that we hadn't studied in class but had studied other poems written by the same poets. We then had to identify who had written each poem based on the language used and the writing style and other things. It was difficult but possible because how we write also identifies who we are. Each of us think in such a unique way that our writing style is defined by who we are. That is another reason why writing is so beautiful. We can tell each other apart from the way we write.
Write so that people know who you are and what you’re like!

Baby, it's Over (20)

Well, we made it! Here's my last post for the requirements. I want to say I'll keep posting after this class, but I know how I am and it's a stretch to say that. That being said, I understand that this would be an important thing to keep going. Through this blog I have been able to express myself in ways that I've never really done before. I would say that this is a very healthy experience and also slightly therapeutic.

In conclusion, I can see that through writing my experiences, and reading those of others, I am able to learn and see things through another perspective. This helps me connect more with others and understand what they feel as I'm sure at least a few of you who read this can see a little into my head and understand what my thoughts and feelings are about a few things.

I'm going to do my best to continue posting. Don't get mad at me if it doesn't happen very often, but I'll try to keep you posted with how my hang gliding career is going and such like that. I'll try and give you the BYU experience through my eyes. I hope you all have a wonderful day and enjoy reading my writings!

Finals (19)

I don't think this would be a true college student's blog if it didn't have a lil' somethin' somethin' about finals! Thankfully, this isn't finals week but I'm sure you can all feel what it's like to have Dooms Day approaching slowly and inevitably. For a few of you, this is your first semester and you haven't experienced what finals at BYU are like. In all honesty, it's only as bad as you make it. If you like to stress and freak yourself out, you'll have a miserable week. So think about that. If you are confident, give yourself adequate time for EFFECTIVE studying and plan out your week well, you'll be fine. Don't try and cram nor keep yourself up too late. The only thing you'll do is wear your brain out and it won't perform well. Go to review sessions, study in groups, try and teach others about your class, make flash cards, and look for other opportunities to apply what you learn in your classes. These are some of the most effective ways to study. Don't fool yourself like I do sometimes where you just stare at the material hoping that it'll just morph into your brain, it won't!

I hope this helps you at least a little so you'll make it through finals week. Just remember, you'll survive, your professors aren't out to get you although it may feel that way sometimes. Take it easy and good luck on those wee finals!

Almost There (18)

Well I'm starting to get close to finishing the required blog posts for my writing class. The closer I get the more excited I am to actually finish! I am enjoying writing about whatever comes to my head and tell you what my thoughts and opinions are about the experiences I've had. If I have any sort of advice it would be to check class requirements and make sure you're staying on top of them so you don't have to do it all at once and hope you at least finish! That way you're not only focused on getting it done, but that you're actually able to focus on doing it well. I'm not saying that this isn't a good blog. No way, I'm too prideful for that! I am saying, however, that this blog would be so much better if instead of writing it all right now, I could be perfecting it and adding more details and fun little mix-ins. Just remember that, pals. It'll serve you well!

Soar (17)

I don't know about for you guys, but flying has always been something that has caught my attention as something I want to do. I'm not talking about flying from here to California, or any sort of commercial flying, although very convenient. I'm talking about flying my own vessel! I want to control where and how I fly. To be able to have the freedom of a bird to dip, dive and fly as high as I can is what I want. In search for these flying opportunities I went skydiving a few times. Although skydiving is very exciting and gives an adrenaline rush, it wasn't quite the flying experience I was looking for. I then decided I would try hang gliding to see if that fulfilled my needs. I went for a tandem flight at the Point of the Mount to try it out. All I can say is that there's nothing like it! The wind picks you up and without any sort of propeller or thrust you can climb higher and higher if you know your way around thermals and other wind formations. The ground is no longer a limitation and you aren't stuck in a two dimensional plane, you can go wherever you want!

I decided that hang gliding was something I wanted to do. I already had a friend who was into it and had his own glider so it wasn't hard to get connected with the right people and as of yesterday, I was able to get my hang one rating! The hang one is the first rating they give out which means I'm only allowed to go under supervision of an instructor and in certain wind conditions, but I am now well on my way to becoming a hang gliding pilot!

Here's one of my first take-offs at Rock Canyon Park

Sailing (16)

The same uncle that I go rock climbing with and I actually have a lot of things we like to do together. Another activity is sailing. When I got home from my mission, my uncle and I decided we wanted to buy a boat. We found a nice Nacra 5.8 for sale and we each paid for half of it. The 5.8 is a catamaran used for racing and that's just what we wanted to do with it. My uncle grew up sailing and I had taken some sailing classes in Boston when I was younger so we decided we'd probably have a chance. We started entering in some races around Utah and had a great time! We didn't always get first but we were often in the top 3. Unfortunately, we managed to snap the mast a one point last year so for the rest of the season we didn't get to sail but last winter we drove out to Washington to buy a new mast and get back into it this year. However, at the end of the summer this year, we managed to bend the mast at a race at Bear Lake. We're not sure why we are so hard on those masts but we're really good at ruining them.

Although the boat has been out of commission, I still like to think about sailing. It's such a different experience. Learning how to use the wind to get where you want is fun and when you can use it to get where you want at high speeds is even more fun! There's no feeling like having the wind blowing in your face as water splashes when you cut through waves. It's fun to go in calm winds and just enjoy being out on the water, but my favorite conditions is when it's so windy waves are forming and white capping. That's when things start to get interesting!

Fake Rocks (15)

Well since I've gotten myself talking about skiing and snowboarding, I decided I wanted to talk about the other things I like to do. One of these favorite pastimes of mine is rock climbing. Before my mission I used to be pretty good. I went quite often and also from playing on the drumline in high school my grip was pretty strong. Now I don't have the same capabilities as I used to but I still love conquering walls and making it to the top of hard climbs. There's nothing better than climbing in the mountains on real rocks but you need to have a lot of equipment that's pretty expensive. I often go with my uncle outdoors, he has everything you need: ropes, draws, etc. All I really have are shoes, a harness, and a belay device. When I get the chance to go outside I take it but it's not very often. Since it's hard to plan to go outside, climbing gyms are very convenient for when I just want to go. Gyms are fun because they have specific climbs set up for all sorts of different climbing levels. Although it's not nearly as fun as climbing outside, it's nice to be able to hang out with friends and easier evaluate your climbing skills on those plastic hand holds.
